Hispanic Day 2017

The children in Preschool 5 had a wonderful day celebrating SEK Qatar Hispanic Day on Thursday.

We particularly enjoyed dressing up in clothes from Spanish speaking countries around the world!

With the help of the Spanish speaking teachers in the school, the children sang songs, played games and listened to stories in Spanish, and made our own Mexican sombreros!

We had a visit from the DP students who sang and danced with us to Spanish songs, and played a traditional Spanish game with us. At the end of the day, we even had some special visits from Spanish speaking parents who read Spanish stories to us.

What a great day!

Parent’s Coffee Morning

Thank you to all parents who were able to attend the coffee morning in school on Tuesday.

It was a lovey morning and a great opportunity for us to spend some time together. The children also really enjoyed showing you their classroom and some of the activities which they do in school.

We are looking forward to the next one!

MaKey MaKey!

Within our unit of inquiry on imagination, the students in Preschool 5 have been exploring a piece of technology called the ‘MaKey MaKey’.

According to the creators of ‘MaKey MaKey’, it is ‘an invention kit for the 21st century’

The ‘MaKey MaKey’ turns everyday objects into a touch pad for the laptop to use online and only works with materials which will conduct electricity.

The students also explored the transfer of electricity as they discovered that some buttons would only work if they were connected to (touching the arm or hand of) the person holding the electrical source (the grey wire). In this way, the MaKey MaKey initiated an investigation into the properties of electricity.

Using the MaKey MaKey the children were enabled to create banana pianos and playdough bongos! 🙂 It was the perfect tool to enable the students to use technology to be creative, inventive and imaginative.

Book Character Day

Preschool 5 had a lot of fun on Book Character Day! We all chose our favourite character from a book and dressed up as them!

We also brought the books to go with our costumes and shared the stories with our friends. Later we showed our creative costumes to the rest of the school in the Book Character Day Parade.  All the children and the teachers dressed up. It was a lot of fun being in school dressed up in costumes! 🙂

Here are some photographs of our great day!

Maths and Science Day :)

It was Maths and Science Day last Thursday morning in Preschool at SEK Qatar!

We had lots of fun rotating through a range of activities with the various preschool teachers. We made lava lamps, did bubble painting and observed absorption through salt name painting for science. In maths, we explored measuring and comparing length, capacity and created tangram pictures using 2D shapes.

Overall, we had a very enjoyable day, and learned a lot! Below are some photographs of the morning.

We are Responsible – Field Trip to Purple Island

The children in Preschool 5 did a fantastic job of demonstrating the IB learner profile attributes of Caring and Principled, on their field trip to Purple Island.

The children enthusiastically participated in a beach clean-up in order to protect the wildlife living there. Well done Preschool 5! 🙂

Researching Under the Sea

The students in Preschool 5 have been working hard researching the characteristics of many sea creatures.

The students have been using the iPads to scan QR codes and reading non-fiction texts from the library.

One website which the students have enjoyed exploring is the National Geographic Kids website. It contains many interesting and age-appropriate videos about various sea creatures, as well as a range of factfiles and photographs for the children to explore.

Please see this link to one of the videos if you wish to explore this further with your child at home.

Hour of Code

This week, both Preschool 5 classes took part in ‘Hour of Code’. The Hour of Code is a global movement, which introduces computer sciences to children of all ages, worldwide. Coding helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early, children are given a foundation for success in developing skills and math concepts, needed in the 21st century. We used Bee-bots and the Bee-bot app to practice our coding skills. As well as learning, we had a lot of fun!

Well done Preschool 5!
